| Social-emotional Development
| Anthony is one of the leaders of the Upstairs classroom. He often sets the tone and the tempo of the day. Well-liked by his peers, they look to him for ideas, especially on the playground and in the block area. He is very good at expressing his feelings and has taken to asking for some alone time when he knows that he needs to cool down and reset. Often, he will ask a teacher to join him during this time and he will rejoin the group shortly. This shows that Anthony has an amazing capacity to recognize what he needs and how to get it. Anthony is also learning that he is able to do many more things by himself than he thinks which is boosting his confidence on a daily basis. We continue to work with him on making safe choices both inside and outside the classroom. |
| Motor Development
| Anthony spends the majority of his free time inside the classroom playing with blocks. He builds elaborate structures with wooden blocks, wooden Legos, and the traditional plastic Legos. You can often find him using animals and bugs as well. When he does utilize art supplies, it is usually during project time. Outside, Anthony is often the leader of a game, usually involving superheroes or fire. Anthony is making progress in learning what is appropriate for school and is becoming less resistant to the idea of “taking a break” when his play becomes slightly too spirited. Always followed by an entourage of friends, Anthony is happiest at this outside time of day. |
| Work and Play Habits
| Because Anthony has so many friends to play with, it is hard for him to make the transition from free time to clean-up time if he feels he hasn’t had enough time to engage in the morning’s activities. This can make transitions slightly challenging for him. We find that, the longer Anthony is able to play in the classroom before clean-up time, the better he tends to handle the transition. |
Group Time
| Anthony seems to especially enjoy the song portion of our meetings. Nancy visits us on Wednesday with her keyboards which is always a favorite of his. Because our meetings take place in the block area, this is a bit of a distraction for him. Sometimes, the blocks will steal his attention away from group time, as they would with any preschooler whose favorite toy was inches away. However, this does make it a bit difficult for him to concentrate on what is going on around him. He does best when snuggling in a teacher’s lap during meeting time. |
Language Arts
| Anthony loves to tell stories and to listen to stories, especially one-on-one. Books seem to be a comfort to him if he’s feeling sad or angry and he enjoys the closeness he gets from having a teacher all to himself. Anthony has also shown a great interest in letters. He has begun writing more and more of the letters in his name, focusing mainly on the letter “T”. |
Project Time
| Project Time is where we get to see Anthony’s other side. Because his choices so often revolve around building things, it is great to see Anthony’s artistic side. He seems to see things in a different way than the other kids and his projects always end up being unusual and creative. He is willing to try most things and able to ask for help when he needs it. |
